The Elenos Group, through its Broadcast Electronics subsidiary, is aproud new supplier to the ATSC 3.0 market. As part of its entry into this excitingmarket, one of the plans newly appointed Broadcast Electronics COO PerryPriestley has is to target medium and small-sized TV stations, which he believesare under-served. Priestley plans to getthose stations started on an ATSC 3.0 implementation plan, inexpensively, usinga partnership with DigiCAP.
Under this new agreement, DigiCAP will provide the Elenos Group with DigiCaster, an all-in-one ATSC 3.0 broadcast gateway witheight (8) critical functions of an ATSC 3.0 headend virtualized and placed onto a commercial off-the-shelf (“COTS”) server. Because virtualized services can be turned on at will, Priestley says ATSC 3.0 involvement can be jump-started at a low cost by turning on just the basics. When ATSC3.0 business models and revenue rise, other services can be activated as money becomes available to support them.
With ATSC 3.0 startup costs reduced, Priestley says there are now two very strong reasons why even the smallest broadcaster should start their ATSC 3.0 investment as soon as possible.
Inside every BE transmitter/translator/exciter is the world renowned “Pro Televisionsupercomputer”, or “PTV inside”, which allows a station to operate today on ATSC, but in just two minutes swop to ATSC3.0 without any hardware changes.
First, it’s important to test how a station’s ATSC 3.0 signal works in the confines of their FCC licensed signal area.
Second, it is beneficial to start the FCC countdown clock. The FCC requires stations to broadcast both ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 signals simultaneously for a period of five years once their transition begins. The sooner a station starts the clock with dual transmissions, the sooner the burden of maintaining two live broadcast stream sends.
